gatsby.jpg
This unit will focus on the study of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s modern novel, The Great Gatsby. We will look at modernist themes in literature, research the 1920’s historical period, complete a character analysis, and learn about the American Dream. This lesson is appropriate for junior level high school students enrolled in English III.
Lesson one: Researching the 1920's This lesson will cover the back ground information and historical context of the 1920's to help you understand the time period that The Great Gatsby was written in and about. When you begin your research, check out this website to aid you in ideas and a spring board to start your research http://www.1920-30.com
Lesson two: Modernist Literature In this lesson we will look more closely at themes in modernist literature. This will help you to understand the implications of the social and political context in which Fitzgerald was writing his novel.
Lesson Three: Character Analysis and Plot Mapping In this lesson, we will closely examine the characters and plot points in the novel to help you identify the types of characters in a story, their motivations, as well as the stages of a story.
Lesson four: The American Dream In this lesson we will connect the elements of the modern idea of the American Dream to the ideas about the American Dream presented in the novel. You will be asked to make a video with the Imovie software as a culminating project on the Great Gatsby. You will need to use your research and previous assignments to complete this project.
